Kilimanjaro Routes Compared: Which Path Is Right for You?

Kilimanjaro Routes Compared: Which Path Is Right for You?

1 December 2025 3 min read Feral Eclipse

Seven routes lead to the summit of Africa's highest peak. Each has a different profile, duration, scenery, and success rate. Here is a clear-eyed comparison to help you choose the right one.

## Kilimanjaro at a Glance

At 5,895 metres, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain on Earth. It is also, by high-altitude standards, technically straightforward — no ropes, crampons, or technical climbing required. What defeats most climbers is altitude sickness, not physical difficulty. Route choice directly affects your acclimatisation profile and therefore your summit success rate.

## The Routes

### Machame Route — "The Whiskey Route"

**Duration:** 6–7 days
**Difficulty:** Moderate to challenging
**Scenery:** Excellent
**Summit success rate:** ~85% on 7-day itinerary

The most popular route on Kilimanjaro. Machame approaches from the south through dense rainforest before ascending the dramatic Shira Plateau. The route follows the "climb high, sleep low" acclimatisation principle and offers outstanding views from multiple angles.

The 7-day Machame gives significantly better summit success rates than the 6-day version — the extra acclimatisation day at Karanga makes a measurable difference.

---

### Lemosho Route — Best Overall

**Duration:** 7–9 days
**Difficulty:** Moderate
**Scenery:** Outstanding
**Summit success rate:** ~90%

Lemosho is widely considered the finest Kilimanjaro route. It begins in the remote western rainforest and traverses the entire Shira Plateau before joining the Machame route at Lava Tower. The longer approach gives superior acclimatisation time and encounters fewer climbers.

**Our recommendation for first-timers** who are not pressed for time.

---

### Rongai Route — The Quiet North

**Duration:** 6–7 days
**Difficulty:** Moderate
**Scenery:** Good
**Summit success rate:** ~85%

Rongai is the only route that approaches from the north, close to the Kenyan border. It is significantly quieter than the southern routes and passes through stunning remote wilderness. The northern face of Kilimanjaro retains snow longer and feels more remote. However, the descent retraces the Marangu route, which some climbers find monotonous.

---

### Marangu Route — "The Coca-Cola Route"

**Duration:** 5–6 days
**Difficulty:** Moderate
**Scenery:** Good
**Summit success rate:** ~65% (5-day) to ~75% (6-day)

Marangu is the only route with sleeping huts rather than tents, making it slightly more comfortable. However, its reputation as the "easiest" route creates a false sense of security — it is actually the shortest and therefore offers the least acclimatisation time, resulting in lower summit success rates than other options.

Worth considering if: sleeping in huts rather than tents is important to you; you have previous high-altitude experience.

---

### Northern Circuit — The Complete Circuit

**Duration:** 9–10 days
**Difficulty:** Moderate
**Scenery:** Best on the mountain
**Summit success rate:** ~95%

The Northern Circuit is the longest and most spectacular route, making a nearly complete circuit of the mountain before ascending from the north. The extended duration gives the best acclimatisation of any route and the highest success rates. It is also the most expensive.

**Best for:** Serious hikers, those who have failed a summit attempt before, or anyone wanting the full Kilimanjaro experience.

## Route Comparison Table

| Route | Days | Success Rate | Crowds | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Machame | 7 | ~85% | High | First-timers on a schedule |
| Lemosho | 8 | ~90% | Moderate | Best all-round experience |
| Rongai | 7 | ~85% | Low | Solitude and northern scenery |
| Marangu | 6 | ~70% | High | Hut accommodation |
| Northern Circuit | 9–10 | ~95% | Very low | Maximum acclimatisation |

---

## The Most Important Factor

Route choice matters — but it is secondary to **acclimatisation time**. Whatever route you choose, opt for the longest version available. The extra day or two at altitude costs a fraction of your total trip budget and significantly increases your probability of standing on Uhuru Peak.
