The Western
Circuit

Chimpanzees on Lake Tanganyika, buffalo herds in remote Katavi, and forests at Gombe. Tanzania unfiltered — for those who crave something wilder.

Region 02

Tanzania, Unfiltered

For those who have seen the Northern Circuit and crave something wilder. Katavi's buffalo herds numbering in the thousands. Mahale's chimpanzees descending to the shores of Lake Tanganyika — the longest, deepest lake in Africa. Gombe's ancient forests where Jane Goodall changed our understanding of the natural world.

This is fly-in territory. Remote airstrips, small intimate camps, and wildlife encounters shared with almost no other visitors. The west rewards the curious and the truly adventurous.

What You Will Experience

Highlights of the West

Mahale Chimpanzees

Trek through the Mahale Mountains in search of wild chimpanzees. These habituated primates live on the dramatic slopes falling into Lake Tanganyika — one of Africa's most remarkable encounters.

Katavi — Untouched

Tanzania's most remote major park. Vast floodplains teeming with hippos, crocodiles, and enormous buffalo herds. You may drive for hours without seeing another vehicle.

Lake Tanganyika

The world's second deepest lake. Crystal-clear water, endemic fish species, and the extraordinary backdrop of mountains plunging to the shore. Kayaking, snorkelling, and sundowner dhow cruises await.

Best Time to Visit

When to Go West

  • May – October: Dry season — best chimpanzee trekking and game viewing in Katavi
  • June – September: Peak Katavi — floodplains recede, concentrating wildlife at water sources
  • July – October: Lake Tanganyika at its clearest for water activities
  • Avoid March – May: Long rains make Katavi inaccessible by road

The Feral Edge

Why This Circuit Demands an Expert

The Western Circuit cannot be done well without the right connections. Mahale has just a handful of permitted camps. Katavi is accessible only by charter flight. Getting it right requires relationships built over years in the field.

Feral Eclipse has operated in the west since our founding. We know which camps deliver, which guides understand the chimps, and how to sequence a western itinerary that flows rather than rushes.
